Time || Rivaille
She wasn’t supposed to have been out there. The nine-year old young girl just wanted to pick flowers, some for the dismal window seal back home. Miranda should have known that going outside the walls was a bad, bad idea, and if she had been thinking straight— which she had not been— she would have never considered sneaking out. Were the bigger, prettier flowers that she had seen soldiers carry in every so often really worth it? Yes, the idea was to pretty up the kitchen room for her mother, in retribution for breaking the third vase that week. To Miranda, it seemed like… well, it seemed like a good plan.
It should have been harder to slip past the guards, but no one paid any mind to the frail-ish looking brunette girl with a small weaved basket in her hands lightly squeezing past a gated hole.
The first thing she noticed was that it was absolutely beautiful outside. The outlawed, beautiful outside. A brighter sun, a warmer sun— taller trees in the distance, and… the flowers. Luminous, colorful flowers that decorated a small patch of grass made the timid girl smile wider than she had in a long, long time. She must have been out there for an hour, maybe even longer— her fingers curling around stems and plucking them from the ground in a lovely tizzy that Miranda had never experienced before. Five blue ones, six pink ones, eight red ones—
The flowers were pretty, but their loud colors didn’t drown out the thunderous sound of large footsteps. Large footsteps that she was warned about in school. She would have moved, ran— but she was scared. Paralyzed by fear. Miranda opened her mouth and at first no sound came out, but as the footsteps got closer and closer, her scream got louder and louder.
